Print Publisher Spotlight: Estate Project for Artists with AIDS
With the death of Robert Mapplethorpe and the surrounding furor over his posthumous retrospective, an extraordinary period of loss began in the visual arts in 1989, making it a symbolic, watershed year. Of course, many artists who were not recognized in the art world, let alone by the public, had already been lost to AIDS. In the years following 1989, the deaths continued at a relentless pace.
"1989" celebrates the legacy of these artists through work created specifically for this portfolio by their peers and friends. The proceeds from this project will support the ongoing archival work of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS. Through programs of digital archives, preservation of AIDS activist video, film, dance, music and theater, the Estate Project ensures that the voices of this era will continue to resonate.
